Seriously, are there old timey musicians in the AGG that will be in Asheville? That might bring their instruments?

Axe Sweet Mama. Haven't thought of that tune in ages. Thank you for posting.

'taint so much the instrument as the music form - this is all kinda alien to me. My music background is first classical then jazz/blues, with a little Latin American street band throw in - though I gave away my kokorico when I moved here!
The music sounds just like my mother-in-law's family reunions.
Rebecca

Fizz's family reunions are generally gallons of whisky then mournful songs of deid sodgers (dead soldiers)  and/or the Fiendish English (or Fiendish Scottish seduced by English money). Why be positive about the future when you can drone on about an imagined past?

My family reunions are instrumental duets, trios, quartets, or sung 4-part harmonies... really not an asset to bluegrass-type music. Mebbe I'll just listen.

Actually Rona

you came pretty close to describing bluegrass music. Drinking, killing and fighting the law are common themes. After all bluegrass is derived from the music that the Scots and Irish immigrants brought with them to the Appalachian Mountains

Hence, the Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain, about sixty-five miles from Asheville.  Next year they will be held July 7-11, 2011.

Oh, wow, a whole set of Scottish traditions we don't have in Scotland! Kirkin' o' the tartans looks fun (a kirk being a church, so presumably the tartans are off to be blessed). Not sure what kilted miles are - stretching out the kilts to see how far they go? Also not sure about cancelling the ceilidhs - a ceilidh is a (traditionally spontaneous) social gathering of any sort. Is gathering in groups of 3 or more forbidden, d'you think? Shall have to get Fizz togged up in his kilt and bits and infiltrate!

Of course you don't have them in Scotland!  Why would you?  They are in North Carolina.

Vic, between the pole, the rocks and the kilt, there is a joke there somewhere in your last reply but I'm going to leave it alone.

Haw Linda, see if you an me git tae bletherin, thae numpties willnae ken whit we're oan aboot.

However, given it's an American board, I really should do my hosts the courtesy of speaking their language, y'all.

Like Scott, I'm steering clear of any remarks about Vic and his interest in Scotsmen tossing their large cabers.
