Long time employee and the archivist at Willet Studio for 50 years, Helene Weis, has passed away after suffering a stroke a few weeks ago. Arrangement are pending but will be posted here when they are known. Helene was really my mentor, and I told her that in a card for her recent birthday. She was so willing to share her information and was instrumental in guiding me in much of my interest in historic stained glass. Her influence is what encouraged me to obtain many old historicala books...and use them when the occasion arose.

HELENE HARMON MARTIN WEIS, 1922 - 2007
Beloved friend, mother, grandmother, and wife, Helene Weis died on November 13, 2007 in Philadelphia, PA, three days short of her 85th birthday.
Helene was an artist and supporter of the arts. For fifty years she was the archivist for the Willet Stained Glass Studio (now Willet Hauser Architectural Glass) in Philadelphia. Here she developed the cataloguing system of the company’s tens of thousands of designs. She wrote window descriptions, and developed the visual plan of windows. She spoke and wrote enthusiastically on the art and craft of stained glass to audiences in the region and around the country.
As Contributing and Associate Editor of the Quarterly Magazine of the Stained Glass Association of America, Helene wrote extensively on stained glass history and practice, its luminaries, and its literature. She culminated her writing life with the historical novel, Colored Winds, which tells of a family of stained glass artisans in Southwark, England, in the Sixteenth Century.
She loved music, and sang with many organizations, including the Mendelssohn Club, the Philadelphia Chamber Chorus, and the choir of Calvary Episcopal Church in Germantown. She was a graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School of Art and continued her practice of the graphic arts throughout her life.
She is survived by daughter Sandra Su, granddaughter Deniz Su, and husband Henry Weis. The funeral will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Third and Pine Streets, Philadelphia, on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at 10 AM. Donations may be made to the Helene Weis Memorial Education Fund of the Stained Glass Association of American, 10009 East 62nd Street, Raytown, MO 64133.
