For almost ninety years the British Society of Master Glass Painters has mapped the growth and development of stained glass as an architectural and decorative art form. This latest exhibition, offered by Society members, shows the incredible range and diversity of the contemporary stained glass artist. It draws together over seventy-five panels, each forty centimeters square and hung as a single 'wall of glass' at the Cochrane Theatre Gallery adjacent to Central St Martins College of Art and Design in central London.
Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view an eclectic mix of style and techniques from those rooted in medieval craftsmanship to the cutting edge of contemporary practice. From amongst its international membership, work by established and renowned designers, Fellows and Associates of the Society, hangs alongside that of students and other Ordinary members. This underlines the open and collegiate ethos of the organisation and its commitment to a broad educational base: from the study of the history and conservation of stained glass to the promotion of excellence in contemporary practice.
For the architect or interior designer, the artist, student or private individual, for anyone interested in exploring the myriad possibilities of 'painting with light' in a building, this exhibition is a must.
