I was wondering if anyone would be able to identify the maker of this window by the mark, and possibly have any info on this studio. Thanks for your help , Adam

Adam, I looked through the spiral bound British

book I purchased a few years ago, Stained Glass Marks and Monograms, ed by Joyce Little, Angela Goedicke and Margaret Washbourn, 2002.  Yes the mark is there, as discussed by Roy Coomber.

W. Tom Carter Shepland (1927-1972)  .  Trained by A. Erridge at J. Wippel, worked for Barton, Kinder and Alderson for about 5 years before setting out on his own.  There are 6 churches mentioned where his work can be found, all in the UK.

Interesting, so if this guys work was found in Canada and it featured a Picture of Christ without a beard that would be somewhat rare?

Adam, there is a registry of stained glass in Canada, similar to the one in Michigan.  It is possible Mr. Shepland has work at other churches.

Dr. Shirley Brown at York University in Toronto has been heading this up for quite a few years.

The artist is Tom Shapland,  I worked with him in the 1950's, painted a number of his windows, as he became well know as a independant free-lance artist he added a middle name, I believe that to be his mother's maiden name and was then known as Tom Carter Shapland.

Tom was born into a farming family near Tiverton, Devon, England.  I understand the family were upset that he didn't continue with a career in farming.

Tom was trained and worked for five years under the supervision of Arthur Erridge for the J. Wippell Studios of Exeter, Devon.

He took up an appointment as a designer with Barton,Kinder and Alderson in Brighton, Sussex as a replacement for the designer James Blackford who left for the USA in early 1950's. At the time I was finishing my apprenticeship in the same studio.

Later as a freelance artist Tom Shapland adopted a plougshare as his maker's mark, this is the logo you have shown in your posting and of course notes his farming origins.

One of his best windows is the great West window in Chester Cathedral, UK., which I was priviledged to paint to his design in 1960/61.   Another is a King David window in Southwark Cathedral, London.

There a many more but unfortunately Tom died all too early in his 40's.

A couple people have asked how to obtain the book, Stained Glass Marks & Mongrams.

http://www.nadfas.org.uk/default.asp?section=244&page=1097

National Assocation of Decorative and Fine Art Societies.

YOu probably need to contact them and see if they take PayPal, or something.  I don't really remember my financial transaction.
