I know this isn't quite a repair/restoration question, but this looked like the best place to ask anyway.
There are two of these for sale on eBay right now. They call them "wall pockets". They have an opening back. They kind of look like something was meant to be passed through the window but I don't know enough about churchy activities to guess what they were for, if they were indeed made for a church. Any ideas?

OK, that's what I thought, and they're shown upside down so they can look like "wall pockets". This seems to imply that the colored glass is outside and the clear slider is inside so you can open it. That seems all wrong to me but I can only see it working that way. Is that about right?
Thanks - Tod

This is a ventilator, the frame is usually made of galvanised steel, hinged at bottom, inward opening, allowing air to flow through the top and are fitted in many UK churches.
Unfortunately, many are corroded and fixed in a closed position because of lack of use.

We call them "Hoppers" - and they're 10-a-penny around here. I'll see if I can dig out some old photos too. Oftten they have lovely cast iron catches, with wheels and cogs, and ropes to pull on to open and close them. They're lovely devices if only they didn't rust so much.

Thanks to all for responding. Note that these little guys don't have any hinges; they're not hoppers or ding-floppys. The opening part must face inside the building and slides up and down while the angled stained glass would be outside, deflecting the rain. Just seems funny to me to have the colored glass obscured by the clear-ish "slider".
