There are several books on iconography that have either photos or drawings of many saints and/or their attributes....which, if you keep one in your camera bag when you are going to churches, will allow you to look something up. For example, I have How to Read A Church, a Guide to Symbols and Images in Churches and Cathedrals....but there are only drawings. When I was recently in Scotland, I found a revised version that has photographs....all stained glass.....and is much easier to "read". Webber's Church Symbolism was an early book to cover this issue and there are several versions of An Illustrated Guide to the Bible. Also Subject and Symbols of Art, and Signs and Symbols in Christian Art. Go to your local book store, and I will guarantee you will come away with at least two.

You can also look for the books on ebay, Amazon, or alibris.com. If you compare, you can find good deals on used books.
