Medieval Stained Glass Workshop (5-day intensive)
Monday, April 16 to Friday, April 20
$425

An exciting "hands on" opportunity to explore the style and techniques of medieval stained glass with noted stained glass artist J. Kenneth Leap. During this five-day workshop at Glencairn, participants will have the opportunity to sketch in the galleries, view rare books in the library, and create their own glass works inspired by those in the museum's extraordinary collection of medieval stained glass. Daily glass painting demos and instruction will include tracing, matting and silverstaining in the Gothic style. Participants will also explore techniques developed by the Bryn Athyn glassmakers to develop their own glass and paint formulas for the production of the windows in Bryn Athyn Cathedral and Glencairn. A glass blower will be in residence for part of the week in preparation for the "Stained Glass Sunday" on April 22nd. (See below) More information is here, or contact J. Kenneth Leap directly.

Although this School relates to blown glass, I thought it was interesting to ponder why such venues for flat glass don't exist:

Glencairn Stained Glass Tour with J. Kenneth Leap

Saturday Oct 20, 2007 11:30 AM

As I mentioned at my lecture at the AGG conference, I have volunteered to lead a tour of the stained glass collection at the Glencairn Museum on Saturday October 20th at 11:30-2:30 PM. In addition to the opportunity to view the largest privately held collection of Medieval Stained Glass in the US, I have arranged some additional treats for this tour only. Although our group will not be able to visit the glass storage vault below the Bryn Athyn Cathedral, I am working with the museum to put together a display of the original glass making tools, recipe books and blown glass sheets to give the visitor a comprehensive overview of the achievement of the Bryn Athyn glassmakers. In addition we will have th e opportunity to view some of the rare books on stained glass that Raymond Pitcairn collected as aids to his craftsmen - these are unique treasures not to be missed! All this for the ridiculously low price of $7!

Space will be limited - please reserve directly with the Museum 267-502-2993 http://www.glencairnmuseum.org

FLOWER PAINTING – plants and their meanings – 4 days – all skill levels
Glass Painting Concentration: Flowers & Their Meanings

With J. Kenneth Leap

May 15-18,  2008:   10 AM - 5 PM $375

Class held at The Stained Glass Center @ The Wheaton Arts @ Cultural Center, Millville, NJ

Registration handled by the instructor – email your interest to: paintedwindow@comcast.net

In this extended workshop students will explore the symbolism of plants and flowers in Renaissance painting while drawing from direct observation in the classroom. The curriculum is designed to strengthen the student’s ability to draw, shade, compose and stylize. Drawing instruction will be given for all levels. Sketches produced in charcoal and ink will be painted onto glass using vitreous pigments and fired in the kiln. This historic technique was used to create imagery for the stained glass windows of the great cathedrals of Europe.

Advanced techniques covered in this workshop include: silver staining, etching flashed glass and the use of transparent enamels.

About the instructor:

J. Kenneth Leap has been painting on glass for over 20 years. His narrative stained glass panels have earned him numerous awards. He maintains a teaching studio at the Wheaton Arts & Cultural Center where he has been an artist-in-residence since 1995. His work involves large-scale architectural glass commissions for residential, liturgical and corporate clients including Percent-for-Arts projects for the New Jersey government. Information on other workshops in professional glass painting techniques are available at: http://www.jkennethleap.com
