I have been asked about church windows in the 1904 First Baptist Church in Middletown, Ohio.  A memorial plaque has "The Gorham Co." on it and one of the windows has the letters T S M on top of each other in a circle. and this window is a copy of  the William Bouguereau painting "The Virgin with Angels"
(1900).  The "T S M" in a circle is on the center painted panel, right below the throne along the right side.  The T is the largest, with the M and the S intertwined with the leg of the T.  I have photos of the windows I could forward to someone, but don't know know how to link them in here.

Actually the person who sent them tells me today the Gorham placque may not have anything to do with the windows....just a "statement" from a large donor (Sorge family)to many church related donations.

So, we need a stained glass artist/firm with TSM, or SMT, or TMS as initials...

Barbara, if you email a picture to me, I can post it.  Or, look at the bottom of the page when you are posting.  You will see "Attachment:" and a white box with a gray box beside it which says "Browse..."  If you click on the gray box that says, "Browse..." you can find the picture on your computer.

First to my eyes the center 3 lancets do not look like the rest of the window. From1886-1906 Gorham was the US rep for Heaton, Butler & Bayne. AFter that date Gorham made windows in the style of HB&B. Gorhams head designer in this style was Thomas W. Blanden

Vic....agreed, the painted windows probably replaced some opalescent, but I am hoping someone, somewhere, will have observed the overlapping TSM monogram somewhere....either in the US or in the UK.

Hello Barbara,

I have seen variations of this symbol in the Catholic Church.  I am not sure the Baptist reference would be the same, however:

"Crux commissa" or "thau" or "tau": the T-shaped cross is mentioned in the Old Testament and is seen as a foreshadowing of the Cross of Christ and the SM is usually for "St. Mary".  The three are often grouped as Mary conceived the Christ who was to bear the cross.

Again, this is from the Catholic perspective.

John

Hmmm....very interesting John.  I am forwarding your comments on to the person who made the original query.  He may have some additional insight into this.  Thanks.
