“The Beautiful Experience” with Judith Schaechter

Date: Saturday, June 5th
Time: 8pm
Admission: $5
Presented by Phantasmaphile

World-renowned stained glass artist, Judith Schaechter, will share her thoughts on Beauty through an image-rich presentation based upon her own research and ruminations.

Her talk is in response to the growing dialogue in the art world started by Dave Hickey 17 years ago, when he first published his book “The Invisible Dragon: Four Essays in Beauty.”

In Ms. Schaechter’s words: “As someone who’s always approached the fine arts from a sort of wonky angle — a female craftsperson from Philadelphia who is adamantly figurative and decorative — I have a personal stake in the notion that beauty is not ALWAYS in the eye of the beholder, but sometimes in the object beheld.”

Judith Schaechter has lived and worked in Philadelphia since graduating in 1983 with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design Glass Program. She has exhibited widely, including in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. She is the recipient of many grants, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Crafts, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, The Joan Mitchell Award, two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts awards, The Pew Fellowship in the Arts and a Leeway Foundation grant. Her work is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution and numerous other collections. Judith has taught at The Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, The Penland School of Crafts, Toyama Institute of Glass (Toyama, Japan), Rhode Island School of Design, The Pennsylvania Academy, the New York Academy of Art and at The University of the Arts. Judith’s work was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial and she is a 2008 USA Artists Rockefeller Fellow.

She currently has an exhibition at Claire Oliver Gallery, “Beauty and the Beef,” up until June 26.

“Creativity: Surviving Challenges”
“Artist Judith Schaechter will show some examples of her own intricate, narrative glasswork and will talk about approaches to creative thinking – both as an artist in studio practice and as a teacher guiding students in developing their craft and concepts.

How can new creative ideas be cultivated?  The creative process is weird, elusive and ultimately unknowable. Sometimes ideas occur suddenly, sometimes they linger and sometimes there is the dreaded “block.”  How can teachers in the arts help students to embrace and better understand that creativity and perseverance are essential, yet difficult?  How can art teachers help students value the process of exploration to find multiple possibilities?

Schaechter has considered these questions, influenced by the Multiple Intelligences research of Howard Gardner, to explore the challenges that artists face.  She developed a quiz to guide her students in the exploration and discussion of their own creativity in practice---looking at inspiration, work habits, motivation, beliefs and audience.”

Exhibition:
GLASSTRESS 2011
Info from their facebook page:
“JOIN US IN ITALY FOR GLASSTRESS 2011!!!

On the heels of his resounding success with GLASSTRESS  at the 2009 Venice Biennale, Adriano Berengo returns with a splendid sequel… GLASSTRESS 2011… part of the official program of the 54th Venice Biennale of Art, which will be held at the stunning Instituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti in Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti on the Grand Canal, June through November, 2011.

Unlike its cultural predecessor, this exhibition consists of 20 site specific installations, where prominent invited artists have each deliberately selected a room at the Palazzo in which they will exhibit their contemporary work in glass. The roster, to name a few, includes Judy Chicago, Tony Cragg, Jan Fabre, Jim Hodges, Vik Muniz, David Nash, Jaume Plensa, Koen Vanmechelen, Fred Wilson. Contributing their professional vision to this unique exhibition, are two experts, Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Curator of MOCA, Miami, Florida.

The plus factor, is the ancillary exhibition at the Berengo Center for Contemporary Art and Glass, in Murano. This segment of the show emphasizes the possibility of experimenting and challenging glass as an innovative and significant material. Represented are emerging and established international architects and designers, whose focus is on glass and its reciprocal influences within the world of architecture and design.

To further its educational component, GLASSTRESS 2011, includes on-site discussions/ lectures regarding glass as a material for the future, and its eco compatibility. Also, socio-politically, glass has been viewed as an instrument of peace, since historically production of glass increases during prosperous periods, as does production of steel, during tumultuous times. Continuous workshops discussing numerous aspects of glass and its use in art, architecture, and design, will be held at the Palazzo Franchetti during the Venice Biennale, 2011.

GLASSTRESS 2011 is produced by Venice Projects, a partnership between Adriano Berengo and Susan Scherman of San Francisco. Venice Projects was established to support internationally recognized contemporary artists, providing some with an opportunity to express their creativity in a new medium, glass. To accomplish this, Venice Projects commissions Berengo Studio and its glassmasters, to fabricate the technical aspects of the artistic creation. Venice Projects Gallery - Dorsoduro 868, 30123, Venice, Italy.”

Eastern State Penitentiary Announces Four New Artist Installations for 2012 Season
With four new and seven returning installations filling the cellblocks, Eastern State presents most ambitious works to date
Philadelphia, PA (January 16, 2011) – Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site welcomes four new artists to its growing artist installation program and continues to feature many of the visitors’ favorite installations from previous years. In 2012 there will be 11 artist installations on view during all public hours, including new installations by Lisa Bateman, Tyler Held, Ryan Legassicke and Judith Schaechter. Artists are chosen for their ability to address Eastern State’s primary themes—including issues of crime and justice, architectural history, and the site’s fascinating past—with a memorable, thought-provoking approach.

To celebrate a new season of history exhibits and artist installations, the historic site will host a reception on Friday, May 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend, free of charge, for a chance to meet the artists and see the new exhibits. Light refreshments will be served.

About the installation: Stained glass artist Judith Schaechter’s ambitious new work responds to the penitentiary’s narrow skylights and arched windows. This is the artist’s first work designed for a specific architectural setting. The imagery, which she describes as “addressing in a non-religious way the psychological border territory between ‘spiritual aspiration’ and human suffering,” is evocative of theology but secular in purpose.

One of the works is the second largest I have ever made— a scene including over 95 figures battling it out.

Glasstress New York: New Art from the Venice Biennales
The Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY

February 14 - June 10, 2012
The Museum of Arts and Design is proud to present Glasstress New York: New Art from the Venice Biennales an extraordinary international gathering of glass sculpture created in Murano at the studio of entrepreneur and mentor Adriano Berengo. Berengo, the founder of Venice Projects, has engaged artists, architects and designers from such diverse countries as the United States, China, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, and Spain. The resulting works were originally commissioned for and presented at the Venice Biennials of 2009 and 2011. The pieces are dramatic and often provocative, ranging from independent sculptures to installations incorporating sounds and light to prototypes for production. The spirit of innovation and experimentation pervades the works in this exhibition; many of the artists and designers were given their first opportunity to work with this challenging medium, and in collaboration with the brilliantly capable master glass artisans assembled by Adriano Berengo.
Artists featured in the exhibition include: Jan Fabre, Michael Joo, Jaime Hayon, Patricia Urquiola, Tony Oursler and Mike + Doug Starn to name a few.
